Rocky Mountains Weekend Guide: Estes Park and Trail Ridge Road

Day 1: Denver to Estes Park

Drive up from Denver through Big Thompson Canyon and check into your cabin. Stroll the downtown riverwalk, watch for elk in the meadows at dusk, and turn in early to adjust to the altitude.

Day 2: Rocky Mountain National Park

  • Early entry with your timed-entry permit
  • Sunrise at Bear Lake, then the Emerald Lake trail
  • Picnic and wildlife watching in Moraine Park
  • Afternoon drive over Trail Ridge Road to the Alpine Visitor Center

Day 3: Fall River and home

Take a slow morning along Fall River — coffee on the cabin deck, a short waterfall hike, and souvenir stops in town before the drive back down to Denver.
