Sleeping arrangements
Map the floor plan against your family. Are the kids' beds near yours or up a spiral staircase? Is the bunk room actually a room, or an open loft that stays loud until the adults sleep? Ask for the floor plan if one isn't posted.
Kitchen reality check
- Full-size fridge (not a mini) for milk, snacks, and leftovers
- Dishwasher — the difference between vacation and relocated chores
- High chair, or room to clip one on
- Enough seating for everyone to eat at once
Safety and kid-proofing
- Pool: is it fenced with a self-latching gate? (Non-negotiable with toddlers)
- Stairs: are gates available or bring-your-own?
- Balconies and railings on upper floors
- Hot tub locks and covers
- Blind cords and floor-level outlets in the kids' room
Laundry and gear
A washer and dryer halves the packing list. Many family-oriented rentals and managers also offer cribs, pack-and-plays, beach chairs, and wagons — ask before you haul yours across the country.
Location with kids
Proximity beats perfection: a five-minute walk to the beach or slopes is worth more than an extra bedroom when someone needs a nap. Check for a grocery store within a short drive and at least one rainy-day option nearby.
The pre-booking message
- Is the pool fenced, and can you send a photo of the gate?
- What baby and kid gear is included?
- Is there a pack-and-play, and does it come with sheets?
- How close is the nearest grocery store and urgent care?
