Because towns are strung along a narrow ribbon of sand, your choice of village matters more than your choice of house. Decide first whether you want the lively central beaches, the quiet of Hatteras, or the upscale northern villages, then shop for homes within that zone.

For swimming and full summer energy, late June through August. For warm water, open bookings, and lower rates, September and early October are the local favorite.
