Three Perfect Days in the Outer Banks

Day 1: The northern beaches

Start in Corolla with a morning wild-horse tour onto the 4x4 beaches of Carova — go early, before the sand gets soft and the tours crowd. Spend the afternoon on the wide Corolla beach, then climb the Currituck Beach Lighthouse for golden-hour views.

Dinner in Duck: walk the soundfront boardwalk at sunset and eat with your feet almost in the water.

Day 2: Central OBX classics

  • Morning at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills
  • Climb the dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park — the tallest on the East Coast
  • Lunch at a pier house in Nags Head
  • Afternoon beach time on your cottage's home sand
  • Sunset and seafood on the sound side

Day 3: Hatteras Island

Drive south down NC-12, one of America's great beach roads. Climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, walk the point where the currents collide, and browse the village of Buxton.

With an early start and an appetite for adventure, catch the free ferry to Ocracoke for lunch in the harbor village before ferrying or driving back.

Where to stay

Base yourself in one cottage for the whole trip — the OBX rewards settling in. Corolla and Duck suit the northern itinerary; Nags Head is the central compromise; Hatteras Island is for those who'd rather hear waves than traffic.

Know before you go

  • Summer Saturdays are changeover day — expect traffic on US-158 and NC-12
  • Bring or rent beach gear; many cottages include chairs and umbrellas
  • Hurricane season runs June–November; travel insurance is cheap peace of mind
