Destin & 30A: A Beach-Lover's Field Guide
Emerald water, a floating sandbar party, and a string of postcard beach towns — how to do the Emerald Coast right.

The beach comes first
The sand on this coast is nearly pure quartz, ground fine by Appalachian rivers and delivered by the Gulf — it stays cool underfoot and squeaks when you walk. Claim your spot early in peak season, or book a rental with deeded beach access and skip the scramble.
A day on the water
- Pontoon to Crab Island, the submerged sandbar where boats raft up all summer
- Dolphin cruise from the Destin Harbor at golden hour
- Charter fishing in the 'World's Luckiest Fishing Village'
- Paddleboard the rare coastal dune lakes along 30A
Town-hopping 30A
Rent bikes and ride the Timpoochee Trail east: Seaside's food-truck row and famous post office, WaterColor's cerulean pools, Grayton Beach's dive-bar soul, and Rosemary Beach's brick streets. Each town is a few minutes apart and each has its own personality.
Where to eat
Gulf-to-table is the rule: grilled grouper, royal red shrimp, and oysters from just down the coast. The harbor boardwalk handles the classics; 30A's towns cover everything from tacos to white tablecloths.
Know before you go
- Check the beach flag system daily — double red means stay out of the water
- Saturday is changeover day; expect traffic on US-98
- State parks (Henderson Beach, Grayton Beach) offer the least crowded sand
